Girls welcome to our blog:
today I take you on a fascinating journey through the history of lingerie. Get ready to discover how this garment has gone from a simple functional garment to a true symbol of fashion, beauty and self-affirmation.
Where It All Began
The first forms of underwear date back to ancient Egypt, but it was only in Italy, during the Roman era, that their actual development occurred.
In Roman society, the care and cleanliness of the body represented an important part of daily life, it is therefore, in this context, that women began to wear the first forms of bra: ouch, tight bands under the breast to please men. men of the time who were horrified at the sight of large, sagging breasts, because they recalled those of barbarian populations.
A leap into the Middle Ages...
During the Middle Ages, underwear, from what emerges from the sources, although a little uncertain, seems to have been reserved for men, with the so-called "brache", i.e. underpants/pants. Women used to use them, however, during their periods, as a sort of primordial sanitary pads; a practice obviously reserved for the aristocratic class.
and in the Renaissance
In the Renaissance, the first unisex garments appeared, shirts and panties that reached below the knees and, lo and behold, we witnessed the birth of the garter. Did you know that the first to wear them was Charlemagne? Well, initially, it was men who wore them to hold up their socks. As we know, they soon became part of the female world, becoming a weapon of seduction in all respects, also enriched with ribbons and jewels.
From 1500 to the end of 1800: one word "Corsetti"
From 1500 to 1900, women's lingerie was about everything that shaped and transformed the woman's body, so that it conformed to certain canons of beauty and social standards. The corset was soon joined by guardinfants and crinolines, structures that gave the typical rounded structure to the skirts of the time. Did you know that wooden and metal splints, and even whale bones, were used to give rigidity to the corsets? Towards the end of the 19th century, some medical studies carried out on the use of the corset identified it as a cause of physical pathologies (including the displacement of organs), as well as mental ones, believing it led to hysteria.
1900: liberation
The 20th century marked a true revolution. What does the name Caresse Crosby tell you? American activist, publisher and writer, and... INVENTOR of the bra. When Caresse, nineteen years old, wanted to participate in a dance without the constraints of the corset, she decided to join two handkerchiefs and a pink ribbon, creating in effect the first bra, as we know it today. It was November 3, 1914, when Caresse obtained the patent for the backless bra; Then? oh well the rest is history!
While the corset disappeared, the knickers shortened until they became briefs, initially created for men, they were soon also produced for women, who, engaged in the Great Wars, needed comfortable and practical clothing for moving and working: it was the the beginning of female emancipation.
